Our Kid's Program
Great White Martial Arts kid’s program exposes its students to the self defense system known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In Jiu Jitsu, students learn grappling techniques as the primary method of defense, rather than punching and kicking. They will also learn verbal Jiu Jitsu techniques, which will give them a strategy to deal with bullies prior to an altercation becoming physical in nature. These techniques allow our students to control a situation, without having to seriously hurt their opponent.
In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students learn to take the confrontation to the ground and then move into a position of leverage (control) over their opponent. Techniques are taught using body movement and leverage, with the end result usually being a dominant control of their opponent.
We teach kids in an encouraging, fun environment. We use games to introduce and practice skills needed for martial arts. Our program isn’t strictly a means of physical conditioning. We consider each class a means to build character.
Why choose our school?
We are a like a big family on kid’s night: Our parents are encouraged to get on the mat and help coach the kids. We keep our kid’s class very light and encourage everyone to have fun, using games and a lot of positive reinforcement to aid in the learning process.
Our primary focus is on solving a difficult problem for school-aged kids and their parents: Bullying. Bullying is a huge problem in our schools which can shake a young person’s self-confidence well into adulthood. Bullying is often linked to school violence, substance abuse and suicide in young people. With practice, students will develop self-confidence and learn strategies to deal with bullies, both verbally and physically (if absolutely necessary).
Character Development: Students need more than self defense skills to advance through the ranks at our school. Parents will regularly update the instructors as to whether the students are living up to a personal value system. When students perform extraordinary deeds outside of the dojo, they will be given a star on their belt. Students need at least 4 character stars in order to advance to the next belt.
Safety: Students are taught techniques for controlled falling to protect themselves from injury. Our style teaches the control of attackers with throws and joint locks, instead of punching or kicking.
Costs: Enrollment is always open and we do not lock in membership with contracts. We don’t have hidden registration costs or fees for our affiliation. Students must simply cover the cost of the monthly tuition and uniform.
How is progress measured?
There are 2 methods by which we measure our students progress, by character development and their ability to utilize the various self defense techniques. As previously mentioned, character stars are given out to students who perform extraordinary deeds as reported by their parents. In addition, students will be given stripes for a combination of class attendance and understanding of the techniques. In general, once a student has achieved 4 character stars and 4 stripes on their belt, they will be eligible to test for the next level of belt. Their are minimum age requirements for each belt as well.
How often do the classes meet?
The Kid's classes are offered on Monday nights (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). Classes start at 5:45PM and are approximately 60 minutes in length.
Is there an age minimum?
Although every kid's attention span varies, most 3 and 4 year olds will have trouble concentrating on one topic for 45-60 minutes. So, we recommend kids start their martial arts training when they enter school, at 5 years old.
How much does the program cost?
Kid's participating in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class on Monday nights will be charged $30 per month if paying month-to-month. If their parents sign up to pay their fees through Electronic Fund Transfer, the monthly rate drops to only $20.
